A View to Ruin
January 13 - March 04, 2023

In A View to Ruin, the Lighthaus becomes a nostalgic viewing point. Small window-like structures made from reclaimed wood, concrete, and metal which have been filled with delicately painted objects of ruin, oasis, and domestic austerity set within a virtual landscape. The cropped perspective of these figurative objects in their frames ignites the imagination, fantastical digital environments open up in front of us, as they do in the screens they inhabit. By giving new life to these dense and discarded materials and layering them with the juxtaposition of an ancient and digital aesthetic, Stephen Whittaker reflects on the value of the structures of our present time. Questioning the legacy we leave in the depths of the internet, and our efforts to assure our digital footprint is not forgotten.
